It’s been 15 days since we stepped into 2022, and just two weeks ago, most of us had made some fantastic resolutions.
I resolved that I will commit myself to (Fill your resolution)
I’m still going strong on this commitment, and I am dedicated to following through with it, at least till it becomes my way of life. This is so that once formed, the habit should no longer feel like a forced task but just what I do every day.
But do you know why I can successfully stick to my resolution? Do you know why so many people out there are quitting their promises just a few days after entering the New Year? Let’s discuss that in today’s post.
Why do some of us not stick to New Year’s resolutions?
What is that one thing you do every day, no matter what happens? Just name that one thing! Take a pause from reading, think, and get back with an answer to this question.
Now take that one daily habit and tell me why you still do it every day. There could be several reasons that motivate you. It could be anything from daily brushing your teeth to messaging that one special friend every day or even reading one page from your favorite book.
These are habits that we follow daily because we enjoy doing them or it makes us feel healthy and good about ourselves. Imagine if we could enjoy those resolutions that we must do for our betterment.
Let’s take an example to understand this concept of finding a basis.
For instance, take the self-promise that revolves around replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.
Now let’s enlist a few reasons for thinking positively.
These are just a few reasons that I’ve put down on paper. However, your reason could be completely different. The primary reason to stick to a resolution should revolve around something strong enough to become a purpose for you.
Some people are exhausted with negative thoughts. They no longer want to feel so dark and helpless. They feel better when negative thoughts do not crowd their minds. Or, they liked those moments when they could replace actionable insights with the negativity around them.
Instead of thinking negatively and simply getting frustrated, how about working towards a solution? So, you can do even better when you replace negative thoughts with positivity and think about a solution to the problem. The solution will not only make you feel positive but help you overcome hurdles that you thought were impossible to conquer.
Therefore, your motivation has to stem from a reason that is so strong for you; nobody else can talk you out of it! It has to be your reason that makes all the difference to carry on with that resolution.
And, remember that it’s okay to take a break for valid reasons, like suppose you were down with an illness, so you skipped that morning jog. That’s okay because you can restart your daily routine once you are well again.
Many people do not stick to their New Year resolutions because there is no strong reason to back them up, leading to inaction.
So, my other advice to you is to form the habit of taking action.
Add action to self-promises
Start implementing them rather than overthinking them, and in the process, find your balance and comfort in sticking to resolutions.
I hope you have a wonderful year ahead and make your self-promising way of life rather than a forced task.
